Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission personnel were out on the lake Monday doing additional water sampling related to a multi-lake study of chloride in lakes.  One measurement was the near surface water temperature of 84 degrees.  Summer is still thriving.  Enjoy.  (Posted 8/6/2019)

Email From MLAA President

Greg O'Hearn, the MLAA president sent out an email today to Association members (and non-members, if we had an email address) about reports of recent late night loud behavior on Moose Lake.  Please note, the president sent out a "bulk email" to everyone, however our email system takes information from our database and personalizes the emails addressed to each member and sends one email at a time, so it can look like the email was only sent to you... it was sent to everyone.  This is done so as to minimize our email to you getting caught in spam filters due to mass addressed bulk emails.  Check your email for more details.  (Posted 8/6/2019)

Invasive Aquatic Plant Spraying Tuesday June 25th

We have notification from the biologist that Tuesday, June 25th, invasive aquatic plant spraying is scheduled to take place on Moose Lake. Yellow water use restriction notices will be posted close to sprayed areas.  It is possible the schedule could change a bit.  Check here for any updates.  See Aquatic Plant Control questions and answers further down the page for more information.  Note, based on recent observations, it appears spraying will take place mainly in the shallow waters of the south and north bays. Your MLAA dues pay for the weed spraying.  (Posted 6/21/19)

Lake 61 and 41 Degrees!

Biologists from SEWRPC were on the lake May 29th to do water sampling as part of their multi-year chloride study.  SEWRPC is doing water sampling on a number of lakes in southeastern Wisconsin to study naturally occuring chloride in the water and that coming from winter roadway runoff.  The measured water temperatures were 61 degrees at the top and 41 degrees 60 ft down.  (Posted 5/29/19)

Aquatic Plant Control - Questions & Answers

From Brian Suffern of Marine Biochemists of Jackson, WI

Q.  When will chemicals be applied to the invasive aqautic plants?

A.  When the temperature of the water is conducive to the invasive species absorbing the chemicals, typically in June.

Q.  How will notification of chemical application be made?

A.  Areas treated will be Posted with yellow Water Use Restriction notices at time of application.  This includes posting at the boat landing.  Here is copy of posting at boat launch in 2018.  Also, it is the intention to post a notice here when we know the chemical treatment is going to occur or has occurred.

Q.  What parts of the lake will be treated?

A.  The areas shown on the DNR application map, or less than that, depending upon actual invasive weed growth observed at time of treatment.  The link to the DNR application can be found in the article regarding the 2019 application on this web page. So for those who only water lawns-irrigation may continue.  For those that water entire landscapes via irrigation systems, I suggest that they water lawns by hand (by garden hose) if they have this capability.

Q.  What chemical(s) will be applied?

A.  The active ingredient in either Navigate or Weedar 64 is 2,4-D.   DNR Chemical Fact sheet.

Q. How soon after chemical application to parts of the lake can I go swimming?

A. As for the swimming restriction, it will be 24 hours (swimming can begin morning after treatment).  Please note-this applies to only those areas of the lake where direct treatment occurs-not the entire lake.  Areas treated will be Posted with yellow Water Use Restriction notices. If your part of the lake is posted, then 24 hours after application.

Q.  Can I water my lawn after chemical application to parts of the lake?

A.  As for the irrigation restriction.  The active ingredient in either Navigate or Weedar 64 is 2,4-D.  This is the same active ingredient that is used in many lawn products for broad-leaf weed control (dandelions, etc.).  Thus, it will not harm lawns and has no watering restrictions on Turf.

Q.  Can I water my garden after chemical application to parts of the lake?

A.  However, many irrigation systems are set up to water entire landscapes, including flower beds/vegetable gardens.  While the risk is very slight, 2,4-D may cause injury to these broad-leaf plants.  Thus a 21 day restriction will apply to these areas.

Note, the amount of spraying will be determined by a biologist observing the actual weed growth.  Other notices will occur prior to actual spraying in early Summer.   (Posted 4/16/2019)
